Mr Winter was initially employed as a Process Engineer working on the development of Austpac’s ERMS process to roast and separate ilmenite. Since 1995, he has been involved with the development of Austpac’s minerals beneficiation technology, including high and low temperature fluid bed roasting, hydrochloric acid leaching, and acid regeneration processes.

He has been involved the beneficiation of mineral sands from projects in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Canada, India, Malaysia, including projects with Iscor, Malaysian Titanium, Indian Rare Earths and New Zealand Steel. Mr Winter conceived and technically advised on the process parameters, design and construction of a fluid bed iron sand roasting plant at New Zealand Steel’s Glenbrook steel mill near Auckland and coordinated the commissioning and initial operation of the 2.5 tph mineral separation plant.

He is the inventor of Austpac’s technologies for continuous leaching, the fluid bed evaporator for pelletising iron chlorides, an innovative DRI process for the reduction of iron oxides to iron metal, and fine mineral agglomeration (some of which have been patented). He is the co-inventor of the patented Beneficiated Titania Slag process, and has been responsible for continuing improvements in all aspects of Austpac’s mineral processing know-how.


Mike Smith MIKE SMITH BSc, MSc, RPGeo, FAIG, FGSA, MASEG

Mr Smith has over 35 years experience in the resource exploration sector having managed operations in Australasia, Asia, Europe and South America, involving a wide range of commodities, with extensive roles in investigations for mineral sands, gold and silver, copper, lead and zinc, and uranium.

His international experience, including commercially required residency in the USA and Spain, and work in China, Japan, Solomon Islands, PNG, Bolivia and many other countries has generated skills in dealing with a very wide range of cultures and commercial situations. Mike is the past president of three Australian national geoscientific bodies, and has served on numerous professional and learned society committees. He holds a B.Sc. (First Class Honours) and M.Sc. from the University of Sydney and is a Registered Professional Geoscientist in the fields of Mineral Exploration and Geophysics.
